Feedback
In October 2001 the creator of this web Site, David Reece from Colden Common, gained an MSc in Information Systems from the University of Portsmouth. Following the degree I taught myself how to create a web site using Macromedia Software. I was aware that Colden Common had no existing informative web site that was of interest to a wide cross-section of the local population. Therefore I set upon designing a comprehensive web site for the Parish Council aimed at being be a useful and informative "one-stop" resource for the village.
The Parish Council agreed to the content at their meeting on 4th March 2002 and this is the result.
This web site seeks to achieve five things
provide a focal point for information about Colden Common;
increase awareness of the Parish Council and what it does;
increase awareness of local groups and organisations;
increase awareness of business and public services within the parish;
provide a focus for use of the Internet within the parish by the young, the elderly, and those with little or no experience of computers.

This is the poster designed to publicise the launch of the web site and displayed on Parish Notice Boards around the village in April 2002. It was sent as an A5 flyer to each household in the village with their June 2002 copy of Colden Common Village News. |
The design principles for this web site are simple and are intended to let users surf merrily through a well-designed site with minimal cognitive strain! Steve Krug put it another way in his book Don't Make Me Think! : A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, "We don't read pages - we scan them" and, "We don't figure out how things work - we muddle through". Easy navigation around this site and within each page has been my overriding aim in the hope that users will be tempted do a little more than just scan the pages.
Therefore the site has a shallow but wide structure - from the Home Page most other pages are just one click away with navigation bars on every page at the top and bottom doubling up as a table of contents. This way I hope you will always know where you are in the site. Where there are links to external sites these open in new windows - so how ever far your go astray in surfing in this secondary window you can easily get back to the Colden Common site as the original window is always there on your task bar at the bottom of your window.
The logo in the banner at the top of every page when clicked sends you to
the home page.
All content has been taken and adapted from the following sources:
Leaflet from the Parish Council September 2001
Colden Common Village News
What's On in Twyford, Colden Common and Otterbourne Newsletters
The Colden Common Business Directory
The Clerk to the Parish Council
Colden Common Appraisal Team
Hampshire County Council Web Site
The use of icons has been used to make the pages more attractive and reduce the effect of what might otherwise be many verbose textual pages. If any of these icons are inappropriate to any of the groups mentioned then please let me know - see Feedback below.
NB: Inclusion of a link to another organisation's site will not constitute a recommendation or endorsement of that organisation or site by Colden Common Parish Council. The Parish Council accepts no responsibility for the content of external links.
For those that are interested.
